Vinayagar Chathurthi

        Ganapati Utsav is celebrated all across the country and is one of the the biggest festival's in the village of koothanvilai. Here we stat to celebrate this utsav from 2006 onwards. This year we are going to celebrate 13th year Ganapati Utsav.

        A life-like clay model of Lord Ganesha is made 2-3 months prior to the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The size of this idol may vary from 3/4th of an inch to over 5 feet.On the day of the festival, it is placed on raised platforms in elaborately decorated outdoor tents for people to view.

        Each locality makes its own special pandal. People attribute considerable social significance to the pandals as communities compete with each other to put up a more outstanding one. Preparations for this sacred festival begin months in advance and the actual day of celebration sees a grand observance of the occasion complete with elaborate execution of traditional rituals, singing of devotional songs, fervid dancing, cracker-bursting and loud chanting of "Ganpati bappa morya..." The Holiday Spot brings to you a precise article on the celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi. Special prasad and food (cooked without onions and garlic) are prepared to mark the first day of the puja. Aarti (a ritualistic puja with hymns) is performed twice a day - in the morning and in the evening.

        For 10 days, from Ganesha Chaturdashi, is worshipped. The whole community comes to worship Ganesha in beautifully done tents. Here also contect games,dance,orchestra, dramatic performances, films, devotional and ciema songs around with Loud-Speaker, Lighting etc during the days of the festival. That moments more than kids,men's and women's participate for that competition and win prizes.

        On the 11th day,afternoon provide annathaanam and the clay model of Lord Ganesha is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with Loud-Speaker, dancing, singing, to be immersed in a sea at midaalam. Symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of all man. All join in this final procession shouting "O father Ganesha, come again early next year". After the final offering of coconuts, flowers and camphor is made, people carry the idol to the river to immerse it.
