Koothanvilai is located within the administrative jurisdiction of Kanyakumari District. Surrounded by Majestic Hills and the plains bordered by colourful sea-shores, fringed with coconut trees and paddy fields, here and there are few elevated patches of red cliffs with undulating valleys and plains between the mountainous terrain and the sea - coast, so closely interwoven with Temples and Churches and other edifices lies the place, Koothanvilai.
The village receives maximum rainfall during North east Monsoon and southwest monsoon is scanty. The average annual rainfall is 1,000 mm. The village is located on the western coastal side of Kanyakumari District and falls in the coordinates of 8.15°N 77.14°E. The average elevation of the village is 25 meters (82 ft) above Mean Sea Level (MSL). Village is mostly characterized by a flat terrain with a few areas in the northwest region having elevation difference with other parts of the town. Generally the village is sloped gently from North to south direction and also sloping in a radial direction towards centre portion of the village from east and west directions. The nearest Air Terminal to the village is Thiruvananthapuram which is located 61 km away in the south east direction.The broad gauge rail link between Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari passes at a distance of 12 km from koothanvilai village. The nearest Railway station is at Eraniel, Code(ERL). The village is well connected to all parts of the state through road. Nagercoil, the district headquarters of Kanyakumari is situated 25 km from koothanvilai in the northeast direction. Frequent bus services from palappallam are available to the various places of the district. The village has one Bus stand under C category. More than 50 buses daily pass through the town palappallam. It is located along the Thiruvananthapuram – Nagercoil State Highway.
